Web designer
2000 - 2004
I look at this period as my apprenticeship, learning the craft on the job. Starting my first job as a designer in the year 2000 when web design and multimedia was an entirely new industry was a lot of fun. I had a pretty incredible chance to design and experiment A LOT with many visual styles, layouts and navigation structures.
Designing to Windows Explorer and Netscape browsers, HTML <div> tags and CSS was not yet well supported, and accessibility implementation was rudimentary at best. As you can see by this wall of images, user interface design was basically online graphic design. Good times.

Paying due homage to The Matrix. I had a passion for experimenting with fluid interfaces, revealing background treatments as the browser viewport expanded. This example had 3 layers of flex-width backgrounds that would be exposed dynamically. I liked to use all my own graphics and photos, organizing photoshoots with friends was half the fun.

Another example of the flex-width UI technique. The female avatar is a colleague and the crouching dude is one of my mates I brought in for a photo shoot. That's the Melbourne city skyline as it was back in 2001-2. I loved maps as a UI element - obviously still do - but somehow Tasmania didn't make the cut 🤔
